WAN-IFRA is the global organisation of the world’s newspapers and news publishers, representing more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries. WAN-IFRA is unique in its position as a global industry association with a human rights mandate to defend and promote media freedom, and the economic independence of news media as an essential condition of that freedom.

Women in News (WIN), an initiative by WAN-IFRA, is seeking a digital products manager to help bring to market 3-4 core products in 2020. This position reports directly into WIN’s Insights& Operations Director.

Women in News aims to increase women’s leadership and voices in the news. It does so by equipping women journalists and editors with the skills, strategies and support networks they need to take on greater leadership positions and editorial influence within the industry. In parallel, WIN partners with media organisations to identify industry-led solutions to close the gap between men and women in their newsrooms, boardrooms and in the content they produce. WIN is currently working with more than 90 media from 15 countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa, MENA and South East Asia. 

WIN is structured under four distinct, yet mutually supporting initiatives:

WIN Leadership Accelerator is an intensive, 9-month long career and leadership programme for journalists and editors. The programme accepts 100 applicants, annually.  The Accelerator delivers targeted training in media management and practical newsroom skills, alongside intensive one-on-one coaching, mentoring and networking. 

WIN Future Leaders is designed to give aspiring journalists a head start in the media industry. Core activities of this progamme include career coaching, mentoring and networking, all delivered to journalism students by WIN Accelerator Alumnae. 

WIN Advisory delivers bespoke, in-house training and coaching on diversity and inclusion as well as media management topics to help media partners change their organisational cultures and improve operational performance. 

WIN Insights, the research and advocacy arm of WIN, aims to mobilize local advocacy and generate a global dialogue on gender equality and social impact issues through inclusive research, innovative tools, and lobbying and awareness raising. 

WIN is made possible through support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Position Details:

The digital products manager will identify opportunities for technical digital solutions for WIN’s existing research and products that support and amplify WIN’s strategic communications objectives and desired outcomes. They will work with the WIN management team and technology developers and vendors, communicating product needs and translating those needs into new product features for the team to design.

They will manage all digital products end-to-end from concept design through to roll out and maintenance, also overseeing any UX research and design, website analytics, gathering and analyzing business information and process/workflows as required.

  • Specific Products that the Digital Products Manager will oversee include:
  1. WIN Gender Tracker: Manage maintenance of the existing WIN Gender Tracker and shepherd through to completion from beta/pilot phase to launch Commission a new developer to take the tool into the next phase of development; Work with the new developer to refine the tool and develop additional features, analysing how to broaden appeal and usage to amplify impact
  2. Sexual Harassment interactive online tool: Manage the creation of Sexual Harassment interactive online tool, liaising directly with build team throughout development phases
  3. WIN Website: manage overhaul of in coordination with Executive Director and Communications Director
  4. Creation of digital-first resource for Gender Balance handbook and Sexual Harassment research report, to be released in Q2 and Q3 2020 respectively
  5. Work with authors, researchers and copy editors to refine digital content for all products;
  6. Procure and manage appropriate technical expertise to deliver high quality digital products for WIN;
  7. Develop a pipeline of future digital products and to assist with funding applications for these products.


  • Energy, initiative, intellect, flexibility and a team player. Professional demeanor, and ability to work collaboratively and respectfully as a key member of a regionally and culturally diverse team;
  • A minimum of 5 years total experience working as a Product Manager, Product Owner, Digital Strategist, Account Manager, or in similar role
  • The ability to connect the strategic, creative, and technical aspects of a product
  • Experience working in agile and waterfall methodologies and an understanding of how a Product Manager fits into both
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex problems and make strategic decisions throughout the lifecycle of the project
  • Knowledge or experience in general digital strategy, user experience, content strategy, development, web analytics, and/or user research
  • Exceptional time and budget management skills, and ability to lead multiple projects at once
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with remote team members
  • Motivation to understand how existing tools and processes work—always asking why and looking for ways to improve end results
  • Fluency in English a must; Arabic a plus. Some travel required
